Wabi Sabi
An ideal design concept for Bathrooms?

Bathrooms are safe spaces in our homes. They are where you essentially unwind from the stresses of the day with a warm, relaxing bath. The Japanese philosophy of Wabi-Sabi resonates with the same theme. It represents an escape from potentially stressful surroundings like an antidote in our chaotic world. Instead of the relentless pursuit of perfection, Wabi-Sabi focuses on a reassuring sense of peace and tranquillity by embracing authenticity in the unexpected beauty of raw textures by consciously selecting materials and finishes that capture these imperfections.

Simply put, Wabi represents rustic simplicity or understated elegance, while Sabi construes as enjoying the imperfect. Together, complimented with a biophilic design approach they complete the holy triangle of clean, green, and comfort.

Based on biophilic design principles, the architecture introduces natural elements such as abundant plants, natural lighting, and purified indoor air. The layout is free-flowing, with an asymmetrical approach, functionally dividing the wet and dry areas. The transition area encompasses full height (French) windows that lighten up the path, welcoming the user. Full height fixed (French) windows curtain the bathtub area re-establishing a direct connection with nature. The shower area houses a skylight above, animating the area with a play of diffused northern light. To maximize the eco-friendly quotient of the space, the material palette of natural stone, pinewood, and raw concrete meet a flattering contrast of plants and fresh flowers. The warmth and depth of natural materials stand as a reminder that beauty morphs with time, but never fades.

Plants such as aloe vera, bird of paradise, burgundy rubber, snake plant and swiss cheese plant along with fresh flowers like peace lily and orchids have been incorporated. Additionally, the natural impurities found in plants, stone, and wood serve as daily cues that beauty can be found in imperfection. Emphasizing the theme of back to nature, the colour palette relies on earthy hues, greens, soft blues, and shades of taupe creating an atmosphere of serenity. The rustic textured walls house multi-functional niches as storage or decor elements completing the understated elegant look of the space.
The minimal design aims to embrace a naturalistic style by acknowledging slight imperfections as means to a calm but warm and inviting environment. Overall, the architectural space underlines that things are always more beautiful when they bear the marks of nature and individuality.
